In 1860, he was a farm laborer living with and/or working for the S. W. Scott family in Fulton Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 9" tall and had light hair and brown eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he served three terms of service:
1. Enlisted in Lancaster August 9, 1862, and mustered into federal service there August 11 as a private with Co. B, 122nd Pennsylvania Infantry. Assigned as a regimental teamster on January 4, 1863, he honorably discharged with his company May 15, 1863.
2. Enlisted in Lancaster June 18, 1863, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg June 24 as a private with Co. I, 20th Pennsylvania Cavalry (181st Pa), and honorably discharged with his company January 6, 1864.
3. Enlisted in Port Deposit, Cecil County, Maryland, March 28, 1864, and mustered into federal service at Baltimore March 30 as a private with Battery B, 1st Maryland Light Artillery. On November 21, 1864, he requested and received a fifteen-day furlough "for the purpose of making my mother comfortable for the winter as I am the only support she has." However, the army docked his pay $6.24 to cover transportation costs from Cumberland to Havre de Grace, Maryland. Sometime during June 1865, he went AWOL but returned and honorably discharged with his battery July 3, 1865, at Baltimore.
