President of Venezuela. A member of Great Liberal Party of Venezuela, he served two terms as president. First from 26 April 1884 to 15 September 1886 and second from 7 October 1892 to 28 February 1898. Prior to becoming president, he began his military career young in 1858 and by 1864 attained the rank of Brigadier General. Later, he was a Deputy in the Legislative Assembly of the State of Guárico and from 1865 to 1868 a Deputy in the National Congress. He then participated in the Blue Revolution from 1868 to 1870 and the president promoted him to the rank of General-in-Chief of the Armies of Venezuela in 1871. He served as minister of war from 1877 to 1878. He then became Civil and Military Chief of Maracay from 1880 to 1882. He then served as President of the State Guzmán Blanco from 1882 to 1886. As president, he is best remembered for clashes with Great Britain over the border with British Guiana and for his initiatives to professionalize the national army. He was killed in combat during the Battle of Mata Carmelera in the Cojedes State.
