Although his gravestone shows Maurice was born circa 1872 the P.E.I. PARO Baptismal Registry recorded Maurice Butler was born on July 10, 1870 to Mary (née O'Halloran) and James Butler and was baptized by cleric J. A. MacDonald on September 3, 1871 in the St. Mark's Roman Catholic Church at Burton, P.E.I. In 1881 Maurice was living on his parents' farm in Lot 7 of Prince County. The family enumerated at the 1881 census were James and Mary and nine of their children - Mary Ann (17), Catherine (15), Lawrence (12), Ellen (11), Maurice (9), Agnes (7), Margaret "Maggie" (5), James (3) and Johannah "Hannah" (1). Two more children were born after 1881 - Joseph Peter (b: May 8, 1883) and Elizabeth (b: March 2, 1886). ~Maurice Butler married Annie Loretta Griffin at Glengarry and two sons and four daughters were born from the union [Albert Edward (b:9-25-1902), Myrtle Mary (b:8-1-1905), Alma Ann (b:12-28-1907), Margaret Ida [Sister Saint Mauritius of Saint Mary's Convent in Summerside] (b:7-5-1912), Bernice Elizabeth (b:1-21-1916) and Charles Vernon (b:12-16-1919)].
