4543 Private C Keating, 2nd Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers. He was serving with his battalion in South Africa when the Second Anglo Boer War started, stationed at Glencoe, Natal along with the 1st Leicestershire Regiment, 1st King's Royal Rifle Corps, 18th Hussars, and the 13th, 67th, and 69th Batteries RFA, under General Penn-Symons. They fought at the battle of Glencoe or Talana Hill on 20 Oct 1899 (10 killed, and over 50 wounded), retreated to Ladysmith and were present in the action of Lombard's Kop on 30 Oct 1899. They were sent South to occupy Fort Wylie and protect the great bridge over the Tugela, so avoiding getting caught in the seige of Ladysmith, but joined the Kimberley relief force that included both the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. They fought at the battle of Colenso on 15 Dec 1899, where Pte Keating was slightly wounded (Source: Natal Field Force Casualty Roll, page 186 line 11). They also fought at Venter's Spruit on 20 Jan 1900 and at Tugela Heights 13-27 Feb 1900, including the capture of Pieter's Hill, leading to the breaking of the seige of Ladysmith. Pte Keating fell ill just before Tugela Heights and died of enteric fever (typhoid) at No 4 General Hospital, Mooi River, Natal (Source: Natal Field Force Casualty Roll, page 190 line 1). He is also commemorated on the Royal Dublin Fusiliers Boer War memorial on the Fusilier Arch, St Stephen's Green, Dublin, Ireland (see: http://www.irishwarmemorials.ie/Memorials-Detail?memoId=142).
