3493 Rifleman W Hudson, 5th Battalion the (Prince Consort's Own) Rifle Brigade. He volunteered for service in South Africa during the Second Anglo Boer War, deploying in late 1899. He was part of a composite battalion that was formed of Rifle Brigade volunteers who were employed at Frere and afterwards at Chieveley, assisting Major General Barton in guarding the railway line and rail-head. During the battle of Tugela Heights 14-27 Feb 1900 they joined 11th (Lancashire) Brigade under Major General Wynne and fought through the 14 days up to the relief of Ladysmith, when they rejoined the regular battalions they were to be attached to. Rifleman Hudson fell ill as the advance north into the Travsvaal was underway and died of disease at No 4 General Hospital, Mooi River, Natal.
