Funeral services for Rubin L Walters, prominent Richland parish business and civic leader, were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 14, 1992, in the First Baptist Church in Rayville with Dr. Ernest Winburn and the Rev. Milford Walters officiating.

Interment followed in the Mulhearn Memorial Park Mausoleum in Monroe.

Mr. Walters died Thursday, November 12, 1992, at his home in Rayville.

A native of Mississippi, Mr. Walters was born in Polkville on January 17, 1911, moving to Crowville from Franklin parish as a young child. While living there, he attended Central School through the eighth grade.

Later, he left Franklin Parish, moving to Memphis, Tenn., where he lived until the start of the great depression. At that time, he returned to the Central Community and began working in Delhi.

He joined with area businessman Gene Tharpe in starting a farm supply business in Delhi during the early 1940s. Later, as the business progressed, they decided to open another store. The work load made it necessary to divide the business and Mr. Walters took the Rayville store on the toss of a coin in 1945.

The store later became Planters Feed & Seed Company, one of Rayville's leading business establishments.

Later, Mr. Walters and a close friend, W. D. Cotton, one of Richland's leading attorneys, traveled to Washington, D.C., where they obtained a charter for the First Republic Bank. Walters remained connected with the bank for the next 38 years, retiring from the board two years ago.

He also was active in civic groups throughout his life. He was a charter member of the Delhi Lions Club over 50 years ago, and later in Rayville joined the Kiwanis Club. He also was an active member of the National Rifle Association and was associated with the American Registered Hereford Association.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mrs. Lou Beene Walters of Rayville; a son, James Lonnie Walters, Alto; a daughter and son-in-law, Sarah Diane and Mike Gibbens of Monroe; and his granddaughter, Karen Diane Gibbens of Monroe.

Pallbearers were Alvin Lane, Kyle Mills Sr., William Hallack, Jim Cuthbert, Don Walker, Billy Ray Parks, J. W. (Billy) McGlothlin and Bobby Jack King.

Honorary pallbearers were Joe Morris, Bill Graves, Dr. Lester Johnson, C. W. Gammill, Oliver P. Lowery Jr and Huey Franks.
