James Merriman was the son of Paulina Burbank and George Morey. Brother of Charles, Zachary (my great-grandfather), George, Paulina Jr, and Fremont Merriman. His life had always been a family mystery and is still somewhat but some of the mystery has been solved. Paulina's first husband died in 1860. She is buried with first husband Charles Merriman as is James. His name is engraved on the family marker. Through estate records we found dated in 1866 we found that Paulina's last name was Morey and her husband was George. James was born in 1867. In the 1870 census Paulina is a Merriman again and first husband Charles is named as James' father as well as the 1880 census although he died before James was born. No one knows what happened to George. James will always be a Merriman because that's the way his mother wanted it. A cousin of my grandmother referred to James as Jim in a family sheet. She lived with my great-grandfather for a time and he must have told her that his brother was called Jim. We don't know the cause of death at this time. I consider him the forgotten one.
