2687 Private B Thomas, 2nd Battalion the (King's Own) Royal Lancaster Regiment. He deployed with his battalion to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Dilwara on 2 Dec 1899 and arrived in the Cape on 25 Dec 1899 and travelled on to Durban. Along with the 2nd Lancashire Fusiliers, the 1st South Lancashire Regiment, and the 1st York and Lancaster Regiment, they formed the 11th Brigade under Major General Woodgate. They were part of the Ladysmith relief force and deployed to Frere, Natal with their brigade, and on 10 Jan 1900 they set out from Frere to Springfield. They fought at Venter's Spruit 20-22 Jan 1900 and at Spion Kop 23-24 Jan. Pte Thomas was one of those wounded at Spion Kop and died of his wounds at No 4 General Hospital, Mooi River, Natal (Source: Natal Field Force Casualty Roll, page 42 line 30). He is also commemorated on the (King's Own) Royal Lancaster Regiment Boer War memorial in Lancaster Priory (St Mary's), Castle Hill, Lancaster, Lancashire, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/258813/) and on the (King's Own) Royal Lancaster Regiment memorial plaque on the Spion Kop memorial.
