5123 Private J Broderick, 2nd Battalion the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. He was serving with his battalion in South Africa when the Second Anglo Boer War started, stationed at Glencoe, Natal along with the 1st Leicestershire Regiment, 1st King's Royal Rifle Corps, 18th Hussars, and the 13th, 67th, and 69th Batteries RFA, under General Penn-Symons. They fought at the battle of Glencoe or Talana Hill on 20 Oct 1899 (10 killed, and over 50 wounded). The battalion retreated to Ladysmith and were present in the action of Lombard's Kop on 30 Oct 1899. They were sent South to occupy Fort Wylie and protect the great bridge over the Tugela, so avoiding getting caught in the seige of Ladysmith, but joined the Kimberley relief force that included both the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. They fought at the battle of Colenso on 15 Dec 1899 where Private Broderick was killed in action.
