3741 Private G Bryant, 2nd Battalion the Gloucestershire Regiment. He deployed with his battalion to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Cymric on 1 Jan 1900, and arrived at Cape Town on the 21 Jan 1900. Along with the 2nd East Kent Regiment, 1st West Riding Regiment, and 1st Oxford Light Infantry, they formed the 13th Brigade under Brigadier General C E Knox. They joined the main army advance from the Modder River to Bloemfontein and and Pretoria. Pte Bryant was selected to join the mounted infantry company and was with the 2nd Mounted Infantry Brigade, consisting of the the 5th and 8th Mounted Infantry, during operations in the Free State against the Boer commander De Wet in late 1900. On 5 Nov 1900 they had identified a Boer Commando under De Wet on the Valsch River with 800 Orange Free State commandos, some 8 kms south of Bothaville. The following morning they surprised the Boers in a dawn attack, forcing many of the Boers to flee, and after a fierce 4 hour battle, killed 25 of the enemy, took 130 prisoners and captured 6 field guns. Private Bryant was killed in the attack. He is also commemorated on the Gloucestershire Regiment Boer War memorial in Queens Road, Clifton, Bristol, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/198503/).
