Then on Feb 27, 1797 the lease was proved by the oath of Archelaus Gilliam, John Nichols, Jr., and Patrick Lynch witnesses whose names are thereunto subscribed. My note: "Best Friend" is an individual who acts on behalf of another individual who does not have the legal capacity to act on his or her own behalf. At Common Law, when an individual was unable to look after his or her own interests or manage his or her lawsuit, the court would appoint a person to represent that individual's legal interests. In court terminology this person was called a next friend, which is derived from the French term proclaein ami. Individuals requiring a next friend included minors, persons who were mentally ill or mentally retarded, infirm or senile persons, and others whose disabilities prevented them from managing their affairs. Guardians ad litem are commonly used in family and juvenile courts, where the best interests of the child require an independent, neutral person to safeguard the chillds rights. Dance was about 22 or 23 years old and still single. But this document says that he was under 21, which would put his birthdate to be about 1778??? He didn't marry Keziah until Nov. 2, 1799.

FINCASTLE (Montgomery County):

1773-It is questionable as the whether this land plat is related to our John Grant and Brown family, but the names and dates require me to mention it in this record:
"Orig. date of a land plat in Fincastle Co., Va. of 217 acres, first settled in 1774, was originally surveyed for Frances Muncey on Dec 16, 1773. Then transfered to John Grant on Feb. 28, 1776, and by him to Thomas Brown on Jan 13, 1778. Then ordered to Edward Billips by the Comm. in Sept. 1782."

1774 – land settled
1776, Sept 17 from Francis Muncey to John Grant

1794 - Edward Billups sold this land according to email message below:

Joseph was known to have purchased 700 acres in Lunenburg Co., VA, 8/15/1756. From What I have, the descendents of Edward migrated to WV, OH, IN, IL, IA, MO, KS and on to CA, OR, WA.
