Oscar M. Lake, a young man 20 years old, born Mar. 2, 1884, was killed Aug 12, 1903 at the Clary and Shults Mine, a hard rock lead and zinc mine, northeast of Galena Kansas on Wednesday morning. He picked up an old piece of gas pipe that contained powder and attempted to straighten it. The fact that the pipe contained powder (dynamite) was not known. On pounding it with a rock the powder was exploded. The young man lived only a few hours. Burial in the Galena Cemetery, Galena, Cherokee County Kansas.
