Alice-Jane "AJ" Race, age 91, died peacefully on Monday, March 22, 2021 after a brief stay at Rehab at Rivers Edge in Bridgewater. NJ. AJ was fortunate to have lived most of her life in her cherished home in Flemington.
Born on Staten Island, she was the daughter of the late Oscar & Jane Race. Her father was a noted physician in both Staten Island & Hunterdon County and her great grandfather was Dr. Henry Race who practiced medicine in the mid 1800's & for whom Race Street in Frenchtown is named.
AJ graduated from Staten Island Academy and Notre Dame College on Staten Island.
She married Thomas C. "Tim" Tyndale in 1952 and they moved to Somerset County in 1967, later they moved to Readington Twp.
The multi-talented AJ had three careers: she was a realtor, a TV reporter and a vocalist. She ran AJ Realty for 26 years in Branchburg and Somerville, then worked for Caldwell Banker Realty in Flemington and was also a broadcast journalist, reporting for and occasionally anchoring the news at RCN Cable.
AJ's passion however, was her career as a vocalist and cabaret singer, frequently performing in venues throughout the tri-state area. She was a protégé of the legendary Margaret Whiting and she had two recordings to her credit, "AJ, A Time for Love" and a CD, "AJ, Someone to Watch Over Me", dedicated to her daughter.
Her exuberant personality endeared her to many friends and co-workers with whom she enjoyed fine dining, entertaining and mentoring. As a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church Choir in Whitehouse Station, she practiced her strong faith along with bible study and the writings of Charles Stanley. AJ spent much of her free time working on her music, but her great love of animals led her to serve as a volunteer, caring for homeless cats at Tabby's Place in Flemington.
She was predeceased by her husband, Tim in 2004 and her beloved daughter, Margaret Jane in 1997.
She is survived by her many cousins across the country and her beloved Team AJ including, Dorothy Myhre and Kim Manzella.
A funeral service was held on Friday, March 26, 2021 at 10:30 AM at the Kearns Funeral Home, 103 Old Highway 28, Whitehouse, NJ 08888.
Friends visited prior to the service from 9:00 to 10:30 AM.
Burial followed at Moravian Cemetery on Staten Island.
A memorial mass will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Church on April 30, 2021 at 8:30 AM.
