Wracked with tuberculosis, Hughes came to Tucson in 1858 and fell in love with his future bride, 12 year old Atanacia Santa Cruz. She would bear him 15 children, many who would become local movers and shakers in their own right. Namesake of a school and a neighborhood and one of Tucson's wealthiest and most influential citizens, Hughes also has been help responsible for supplying the firearms used in the Camp Grant Massacre.
