According to various records, William Hughes was born 9 Apr 1833 in Pembrokeshire, Wales, the son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Edwards) Hughes. Along with his parents, he immigrated to Pennsylvania about 1838. He came to Kansas in March 1855 to seek his fortune and became involved with the abolitionist faction in the Bloody Kansas battles. He married Ellen Jane Robinson about 1858. They had at least three children: William Robinson (1862-1942), James (b. ca. 1863) and Thomas Jefferson (b. 1866) Hughes.
