Dorothy (Wachholz) Howland, beloved wife of Allen Eddy Howland, died peacefully following Easter Sunday, in the early hours of April 5, 2021 at The Landing at Queensbury, NY.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Adolph Carl and Mathilda (Matthias) Wachholz, and her beloved husband of 55 years, Allen Eddy Howland of Hudson Falls, NY.
She is survived by her two daughters, Ann Howland-Coone and husband James Coone of Fairport, NY, Nancy C. Howland and husband Carl Bennette of Queensbury, NY, nine grandchildren, Caroline Coone, Christina Coone, Patrick Coone, David Ochsendorf (Kristy), John Ochsendorf (Anne Carney), Ann Lichter (Erik Lichter), Rob Ochsendorf (Vi Nguyen), Michael Potts (Christina), Liza Ochsendorf, and nine great-grandchildren, Stella Lichter, Nina Lichter, Sam Lichter, Lucia Ochsendorf, William Ochsendorf, Wes Ochsendorf, Ben Ochsendorf, Jessie Ochsendorf, and Lyla Ochsendorf.
Dorothy was born in Winona, MN on October 13, 1923 and graduated from the Kahler Hospital's School of Nursing, where she served in the United States Cadet Nurses Corps during World War II. For her role as a cadet nurse, she was later honored in the Women in Military Service for America Memorial in Arlington, Virginia.
After the war, she was employed as a nurse at the Mayo Clinic until 1947 when she moved to Hanover, NH to work at the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital. There she met her future husband Allen E. Howland, who worked as an administrator at the hospital.
Dorothy and Allen were married March 19, 1949 in Rochester, MN and lived in Hanover until January 4, 1954.
The family then moved to Akron, OH where Dorothy taught Sunday School at Grace Lutheran Church, and was guild president of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League and was Secretary of the Lutheran Social Service of Northeast Ohio.
She was a dedicated volunteer nurse at Red Cross blood banks for nearly forty years.
In Akron she was very active in Grace and later Fairlawn Lutheran Church.
Dorothy was very active as an officer in PTA.
Beginning in the mid 1980's, Dorothy and Al spent time each year at Lake George, NY in his family's summer cottage, Skipit.
Dorothy loved traveling, gardening, and spending time with her family. She was a magnificent storyteller and hostess. She delighted in making connections among people and nurtured her friendships. She often astonished friends with her ability to recall details. Her memory was extraordinarily sharp well into her 90s, and she was a formidable Scrabble and bridge player and a devotee of Jeopardy.
