Since the age of 14, Ralph worked in the woods. An avid outdoorsman, he loved four-wheeling and did so right up until November 2020 and also pulling horses; he started pulling horses at age 17 and the last time he did it at age 87 he remarked that he was going to "take them for one more whirl!" He owned draft horses all of his life and was happiest when he was at horse pulls or showing horses.
He loved watching and cheering on his great grandchildren at their hockey games, playing 45s (ever the fierce competitor even from his hospital bed), playing and listening to fiddle music, going to dances and enjoyed a couple trips out West and to Alaska.
Ralph is survived by his wife, Kaye (Richards), Camden; children, Frances (Stanley) Carter, Camden; Karen Beers, Bass River, New Brunswick; step-daughter, Ferne Bates, Greens Creek; daughter-in-law, Diane Henderson, Truro; grandchildren, Craig (Angela) Carter, Camden; Karla (Gary) Carter-Smith, Camden; Troy (Mary-Ann) Henderson, Camden; Tammy (Colin) Bagnell, Truro; Lisa Betts, Bass River, New Brunswick; Angela "Angie" (Michael) DeAdder, Debert; Debbie (Danny) Chapman, Moncton, New Brusnwick; Carmen Beers, Moncton, New Brunswick; Glendon (Joanne) Bates, Greens Creek; Karl Bates, Truro; Robert Bates, Greens Creek; Kelly Bates, Greens Creek; John Canning, Greens Creek; Darlene (Robert) Stone, Debert; Randy Delaney, Halifax; Freda Delaney, Ontario; great grandchildren, Marissa, Gavynn, Chase, Lauren, Colby, Chloe, Jenna, Krista, Garrett, Courtney, Kalie, Chloe, MacKenzie, Ashley, Chelsea, Patrick, Matthew; several nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Elma Fern (Burris); son, Brent; step-daughter, Barb Delaney; step-son, Floyd; siblings, Parker, Clyde, Ruby, Rhoda, Jean, Elizabeth.
Special thanks are extended to family doctor, Dr. Stephen Ellis (He's quite a boy!), nursing staff of the 3rd floor at Colchester East Hants Health Centre and to Dad's many friends who were always willing to help whenever asked.
