WENDT, LLOYD, 99, of Sanford and formerly of Nokomis, Florida passed away Sunday, October 21, 2007.

Born in Spencer, South Dakota in 1908, son of the late Leo and Marie Wendt, he began his newspaper career in 1927 with the Sioux Falls (S.D.) Press while attending and then teaching journalism at Sioux Falls College.

A graduate of Northwestern University with a master's degree in journalism, he joined the news staff of the Chicago Tribune in 1934. During his 40-year career with the Tribune, he served in many capacities - from city hall reporter to editor and publisher of Chicago Today.

In 1981, he was inducted into the Chicago Press Club Hall of Fame. He was the author of 11 books. "Chicago Tribune: the Rise of a Great American Newspaper" (1979) earned a distinguished service award in newspaper research from Sigma Delta Chi, the Society of Professional Journalists and "Swift Walker, informal biography of Gurdon Saltonstall Hubbard," (1986) received a non-fiction award from the Chicago Foundation for Literature. Two books on Chicago history that he co-authored with newspaperman Herman Kogan were recently reprinted, "Lords of the Levee" (1943) and "Big Bill of Chicago" (1953) and last year were honored by the Illinois Historical Society.

Wendt enlisted in the US Navy in 1942 and served in naval intelligence until 1946, attaining the rank of Lt. Commander before returning to his career at the Tribune.

During his career with the Tribune, he also served as chairman of the fiction division at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism (1950-53).

He was married to Helen Sigler of Sioux Falls from 1932 until her death in 1980 and has one daughter, Bette Jore of Lake Mary, FL.

He also is survived by his wife, Martha Toale Wendt and a step-son, Mike Toale, both of Nokomis, FL and three grandchildren, Julia Akers of Palm Springs, CA, Brooks King of Atlanta, GA and Lloyd W. King of Golden, CO.
