4326 Private A Butler, 2nd Battalion the Hampshire Regiment. The battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Assaye about 4 Jan 1900, and arrived at the Cape about the 23 Jan 1900. Along with the 2nd Norfolk Regiment, 1st KOSB, and 2nd Lincolns, they formed the 14th Brigade under Brigadier General Chermside. They joined the main Army at the Modder River and took part in the advance to Bloemfontein and Pretoria, fighting at Karee Siding on 29 Mar 1900. After the occupation of Pretoria the 14th Brigade was detailed to garrison the city and neighbourhood. During the latter part of the campaign the battalion was chiefly employed on garrison duty in the Transvaal, being for some time at Koomati Poort. In a railway accident near Barberton on 30th March 1902 they lost 40 men killed and about 50 injured. Private Butler was one of those killed in the accident and was buried in Barberton cemetery. He is commemorated on 2 memorials in the cemetery. He is also commemorated on the Hampshire Regiment Boer War memorial in Winchester Cathedral, Cathedral Close, Winchester, Hampshire, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/198012).
