Butler, Pa., January 5. – George McCandless, one of the oldest native born citizens of Butler, died this morning after a month's illness with dropsy and asthma. Mr. McCandless was born in Butler April 14, 1828. His father died when he was a small boy, leaving seven sons, the only one of whom now surviving is Constable A. Nelson McCandless, of Butler. George McCandless was a carpenter and bridge builder. He was a veteran of the Civil war and a Republican in politics. For over 30 years past he has held the office of inspector of election. He is survived by two children, Linn C. McCandless, a well-known business man, and Miss Clara McCandless, of Butler, and one grandchild, Miss Jean Wagner, of Seattle, Washington. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
