Singer. She was one of Italy's most popular singers in the 1960s and 1970s and was beloved by many outside of the country. In 1959, she won a contest for new voices, and was named the overall winner from more than seven thousand six hundred participants. She went on to record her first 7" single with Cetra Records: Édith Piaf's song "Milord" the following year. Her real singing debut came in the 1961 Sanremo Music Festival, where she came in third place. She would go on to perform at Sanremo fifteen times. At the start of her career, she adopted the one-word stage name "Milva." She went on to record 173 albums and sell 80 million records during a career that span five decades. One of her hits was the song "Alexander Platz," was released in 1982 and explored love in divided Berlin during the Cold War. She also appeared in various films such as "Biblioteca di Studio Uno," (1964) "Via degli specchi," (1983) and "Wherever You Are...." (1988) She also starred as a stage actress, with a repertoire heavily based on the works of German playwright Bertolt Brecht. Various countries honored her career with numerous awards and she was dearly beloved throughout the world. She retired from singing in 2010.
