George Capel was born in Walthamstow, Essex to parents Joseph Capel and Elizabeth Cooper. The fourth child and second son, George worked as a jobbing gardener after his widowed mother moved the family to the Clapham area of London. He married Mary Smith in 1875 and they had four children, three girls and a boy. Sadly the girls all died before their father, and the boy was killed in World War I. George passed away in February 1908.
