Pianist, xylophonist, and saxophone player. He was born the fifth child of immigrant parents. A self-taught pianist, his version of "Misirlou" became a major hit in 1947. In 1948, he appeared on "The Toast of the Town" which was a forerunner of the Ed Sullivan show. And in 1950, he recorded with Jerry Murad's Harmonicats. He was recruited into various popular bands, including the orchestra of Paul Whiteman. He acted in "Piano Rhythm" (1949), "Mohawk Showroom" (1949), and "Audition for August" (1950) "A Theme from the Three-penny Opera" was his last hit in 1956.
