Zoologist. Considered by many to be one of the greatest carcinologists, Holthuis started his career by studying Biology at the Leiden University. In 1941, he started working for the National Museum of Natural History in Leiden. He was particularly interested in crustaceans and obtained his doctorate in 1946 with a study of lobsters. Holthuis was very productive, his publications on crustaceans led to the descriptions of over 400 new taxa. Over 100 crustacean taxa were named after Holthuis.
