Well-Known County Physician Expires While Attending a Patient--A Surgeon in the Confederate States Army.
Mr. J. Bruner, a well-known physician of Matthews, fell dead yesterday morning at 4 o'clock while administering a dose of morphine to one of his patients, Mrs. J. A. Houston. Mrs. Houston had been ill for some time and Dr. Bruner had been attending her. Early yesterday morning she had a sinking spell and Dr. Bruner, who lived but a short distance away, was summoned in haste. He responded immediately and gave her a hypodermic injection of morphine. As he was making ready for the second dose, he suddenly fell to the floor and died before any assistance could reach him.
the deceased was 72 years of age and had resided for the greater part of his life in Mecklenburg county. During the civil war Dr. Bruner was a surgeon in the service of the Confederate States army, doing valiant duty in his chosen profession. At the close of the war, he returned to Matthews, where, with few intermissions, he has since lived. Five children, three sons and two daughters, survive him. The funeral services will be conducted at 11 o'clock this morning by Rev. M. H. Hoyle, pastor of Matthews Methodist church. The interment will be made in the Matthews Cemetery.
