Leon Vernon Harness May 14, 1920 - Oct. 28, 2007 Leon Vernon Harness was born May 14, 1920, to Carroll James and Lucy Venable Harness in Sulphur Springs, Arkansas, the seventh of eight children. When he was two years old the family moved by wagon to Oklahoma, eventually settling in the Mountain View area. In 1942 he joined the Army Air Corps, serving in the 445th Fighter Squadron where he rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant. While stationed in Bakersfield, he met Marjorie Kraft of McFarland. They were married in Delano on January 6, 1945. Following his discharge from the service in 1946, Leon engaged in farming in the Pond area. His last employer was Delano Joint Union High School District where he worked for 18 years as a bus driver and groundskeeper. Leon is survived by his wife of nearly 63 years, Marjorie; his children, Karen Harness of Bakersfield, Richard and wife, Judy of Bristol, Virginia, and Michael and wife, Paula of Chino Hills; two grandchildren, Justin and wife, Maggi of Johnson City, Tennessee, and Carrie Porter and husband, Travis of Lexington, Kentucky. Other survivors include his sister, Flossie McCray of Purcell, Oklahoma; sisters-in-law, Ruth Kraft of Delano and Irene Boyce of Bakersfield; brother-in-law, Clarence Kraft and wife, Heather of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 1, at Church of Our Savior, Lutheran, in Delano with interment to follow at North Kern District Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Lane Family Funeral Home, 1303 Glenwood St., Delano, on Wednesday, October 31, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Lane Funeral Home
