Mr. Groves was born on March 29, 1930 to the late Claude I. and Aggie Carter Groves and was raised by his stepmother, Annie Frances Groves.
In his earlier years he was an avid hunter with beagle dogs that he would raise, train, and sell. He loved to hunt and trap rabbits and enjoyed sharing them with family and friends. He was a supervisor for the Wellons Candy Company and was known by his nieces and nephews as the "candy man". He also was a member of Sansom Community Church.
Mr. Groves was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Maynor Groves; brothers, Kenny Groves, Wilson Groves, and C.D. Groves; sisters, Roxie Jones, Florence Jones, Agnes Jones, Lucille Carter, Myrtle Bell and Edna Jones.
He is survived by his daughters, Darline G. Tripp and husband Mark of Dunn, Debbie G. West and husband, Jonnie of Dunn; son, Danford Groves and wife Marca of Hope Mills and Starr Groves and wife, Linda of Virginia; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren and special longtime friend, Ms. Jackie Bass.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 1, 2021 at Sansom Community Church with Rev. Jerome Pope officiating.
The family will receive friends 1 - 2 p.m. Saturday at the church one hour prior to the service.
