2858 Private J Yates, 2nd Battalion the Royal Scots Fusiliers. He deployed with his battalion to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Pavonia about 22 Oct 1899, arrived at the Cape about 18 Nov, and was immediately sent round to Durban. Along with the 2nd Royal Fusiliers, 1st Royal Welsh Fusiliers, and 2nd Royal Irish Fusiliers, they formed the 6th or Fusilier Brigade under Major General Barton. They fought at the battle of Colenso on 15 Dec 1899 (12 killed, 20 wounded and 45 taken prisoner), at Vaal Krantz 5-7 Feb 1900 and at the battle of Tugela Heights 13-27 Feb 1900, including the capture of Monte Cristo and Pieter's Hill, leading to the relief of Ladysmith. Private Yates died of disease at No1 Stationary Hospital, Modder Spruit, Natal (about 10km NE of Ladysmith) during the recuperation period following the relief of Ladysmith. He was buried at Modder Spruit. His remains were later reinterred at Elandslaagte (about 5km NE of Modder Spruit). He is not listed under the Royal Scots Fusiliers on the cemetery memorial but is possibly one of the 10 unknown soldiers commemorated on the memorial. He is also commemorated on the Royal Scots Fusiliers Boer War Memorial in Burns Statue Square, near the Railway Station, Ayr, Scotland (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/168091/).
