Dancer, choreographer and teacher. Born in Russia he studied at the Leningrad Ballet School with Vladimir Ponomarev. Her graduated in 1926 after he had completed the usual eight years of training in just five.
He joined, what would later be known as the Kirov, GATOB as a soloist and spent four years with the Leningrad company.
He was a virtuoso dancer and did much to expand the boundaries of the male technique.
The roles he most excelled in were those of heroic men in more modern ballets.
Alexei created roles in Lopukhov's The Ice Maiden in 1927 and in Leontiev's, Lopukhov's and Ponomarev's The Red Poppy in 1929.
From 1930 to 1958 he was a principal with the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow. There he created the role Tybalt in Lavrovsky's Romeo and Juliet in1 946, Severyan in his The Stone Flower in 1954, Jerome in Vainonen's version of The Flames of Paris in 1933, Ripafrata in his Mirandolina in 1949 and Yevgeny in Zakharov's The Bronze Horseman in 1949. He appeared as Tybalt in the film version of Romeo and Juliet in 1954.
From 1960 until his death he was a coach and teacher at the Bolshoi Ballet. From 1968 to 1972 he was the artistic director of the Moscow Ballet School.
He made his first major ballet, Nightingale, in 1939 for the Byelorussian Theatre of Opera and Ballet in Minsk and there he made his last ballet, Burning Hearts or Firey Hearts in 1955
