William Chandler, grandson of the town's first fulling miller (William Chandler 1689-1756), was a Revolutionary War veteran who served as a private in Captain Timothy Underwood's company that marched on Concord in April, 1775 and later on Bunker Hill according to the 1908 publication Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolutionary War. He served intermittently through 1778 in several other units.
