Elizabeth Johnston was the daughter of Zachariah Johnston and Ann Robertson. She was born at Zachariah's ancestral home in Augusta County, Virginia. I have toured the old home, called the Barrens or Stone Fort, and it still stands and may be the oldest in the area.

Her gravestone says she was born on the 22nd and another family bible believed it was the 28th instead.

Elizabeth Johnston married Robert McChesney on 22 Feb 1792 in Rockbridge Co., Virginia, officiated by Reverend John Brown. The 18 Dec 1866 issue of the Staunton Spectator lists Rockbridge Marriages, including "Rob't McChesney & Eliz'th Johnson" (sic) on 22 Feb 1792.

Elizabeth had 8 known McChesney children:

James, 14 Mar 1795, (Frances Ann McNutt) below
Zachariah Johnston, 9 Dec 1796, (2 Nancys) below
Annie J, 9 Feb 1799 (Isaiah McBride) below
Mary Crawford, 4 Oct 1801 (Matthew White) below

George Washington, 25 Mar 1805 - 12 Aug 1867 (married Evelina Moffett Craig, 21 Dec 1826). Also: George W. McChesney, Rockbridge Co., farmer, merchant: Roanoke Co.: Texas: died 1867. Catalogue of the Officers and Alumni of Washington and Lee University, Lexington, VA, 1749 - 1888, published by the Order of the Board of Trustees, Baltimore, 1888, p 76. On the 1860 Texana P.O., Jackson Co., TX census, I found farmer and ("SR") stock raiser Geo W McChesney, 55, born in Rockbridge Co., VA; E McChesney, 54, born in Augusta Co., VA; the rest all born in Rockbridge Co. VA: student Jno H McChesney, 18; male student Z McChesney, 16 and stock raiser male, A McChesney, 20. They resided with 5 members of the Thomas Winn family including Hannah M Winns, 30, born in Rockbridge Co., VA. Beside them were Rockbridge Co born sons James McChesney, 22 and wife; R McChesney, wife and kids. In 1870 Bell Co., TX (widow) E McChesney resides with Hannah Winn and her family.

Adam, 5 Nov 1806 - 1891, (Rachel Wilson) below
Elizabeth J, 25 Mar 1810, (Daniel Brown) below

Robert, Jr., unknown (could it be the grave beside his parents that is no longer legible? (Not included in Jas L McCormick's Family Record and Biography, 1896, p 386-387)

Also, her husband's 1839 will leaves to "son Zachariah, the plantation in Rockbridge Co. on the Greenville Rd., about 5 miles from Lexington, purchased of Wm Taylor with 530 acres, also the shares of JOSEPH & BEN that James sold, horses, stock, farming utensils on plantation in Augusta Co., $50. Could Joseph and Ben be her late children?

Her husband Robert died 12 Feb 1842. Sadly 6 months and 9 days later, her son James died on 21 Aug 1842. He was murdered by a lunatic in a domestic dispute.

It appears her gravestone over time is now buried a little deeper (compare 1990/2007 and 2017 photos), as now her birth date is at the soil line, where the oldest photo reveals parts of he death date. It was partially covered then. In 2017, her marker was nicely cleaned by cousin Harry! She is buried beside her husband, near the front of the cemetery in an older section.
