3379 Corporal A Ayres, a reservist recalled to serve with the 5th (Princess Charlotte of Wales's) Dragoon Guards. The regiment arrived in Natal from India before the war broke out. They fought in the battle of Elandslaagte on 21 Oct 1899 and at Lombard's Kop on 30 Oct 1900 (Lieutenant Norwood awarded the VC). They were in Ladysmith throughout the siege. Corporal Ayres fell ill and died of enteric fever (typhoid) at the military hospital, Ladysmith.
