One of Italy's greatest journalists and writers of the the Twentieth Century, Enzo Biagi was born in Pinacchio di Lizzano in Belvedere, Italy, and started his journalistic career in Bologna. Active in journalism for six decades and the author of some eighty books, he won numerous awards, including the 1979 Saint Vincent Prize. He worked on the Italian National TV Channel Rai Uno until 2001.

On April 22, 2007, 86-year-old Biagi made his TV comeback on the RAI with RT - Rotocalco Televisivo, a current affairs show broadcasted on Raitre. At the opening of the show, he declared: "Good evening, sorry if I am a bit emotional, maybe it is visible. There was a technical problem, and the interval has lasted five years".

Until shortly before his death he was also a columnist for the daily Italian newspaper "Corriere della Sera", for which he had worked for since the early 1970's.

Enzo Biagi died aged 87, in a Milanese clinic during the morning of Tuesday, November 6, 2007, due to pulmonary oedema. His body was laid out in state in Milan and was later taken to his beloved Pianaccio, where funeral Mass was said by his close friend Cardinal Ersilio Tonini together with Father Giovanni Nicolini. According to his wishes, he was interred there beside his wife and daughter.
