Abraham Latty Latta was the son of John Latta, an early pioneer of Franklin Twp, Owen Co., IN and his wife Jane McCroskey Latta. John Latta died before 1825 and Jane McCroskey Latta then married Charles Tankersley.

Abram was born in a log house in Vigo County on March 21, 1824 when James Madison was President. He was a farmer and cooper by trade. He married Lovica Dean Dec 02, 1849 in Vigo Co., IN. She was the daughter of Elijah Dean and Malinda Combs Dean of Vigo County. After their marriage the couple moved to Missouri, where their first child was born, and Abram worked as a cooper. They returned to Vigo County where they raised a large family.

Abram served in Company K. 149th Indiana Infantry in the Civil War and received an Army Invalid Pension for his service. At the time of his enlistment he was 41 years old, 5' 9" tall, with a dark complexion and blue eyes. He had at least five children at home and a pregnant wife so he must have needed the $500.00 enlistment bonus. He was discharged due to disability from the Military hospital at Hunstville, AL and received a pension the following year.

Most of their children are listed below, however, 2 daughters Lynella Latta and Margaret J. Latta are unaccounted for. Lynella died before 1880 and Margaret J. Latta married Robert E. Wilbur, and had a son Otis Wilbur, she dies somewhere before 1900.

Abram Latta was a member of Leslie Post 410, Grand Army of the Republic, Seelyville, IN, at the time of his death. The post was founded on Sept 12, 1885 with 23 members and was disbanded in 1909

Abram resided with his daughter Nora Ellen West and her family the last 10 years of his life. He was blind the last years of his life.

Note: Abram's Army enlistment and discharge documents give his surname as Latty; however later Veteran Pension Documents and Grand Army of the Republic documents use Latta as did most of his decsendants.
