Pianist. Lazar Naumovich Berman was born in Leningrad Russia. When he was two, his mother started teaching him the piano. At the age of 10 he made his professional debut with the Moscow Philharmonic playing a Mozart concerto. Mr Berman won serveral competitions in the USSR during the 1950s. Mr. Berman was prevented from traveling to the United States, by the Soviet authorities, until 1976. His American career was cut short after Soviet authorities found American books in his luggage and prevented him from traveling back to America after 1979. In 1990, when Mr. Berman could travel again, he had primarily quit the concert stage. He had then devoted himself to teaching and judging competions. He would, on occasion, play a concert with his son. In August 1990 he moved to Florence and was granted Italian citizenship in 1994.
