Billy Ray was a notorious horse thief in the swampy and impenetrable region known as as the "Dark Bend" Of the Embarras River within the boundaries of Jasper and Lawrence County, Illinois. The Dark Bend was a notorious outlaw haven. Ray shot and murdered a local farmer named Mason Goff in front of his log cabin home in Lawrence County, Illinois. Billy Ray was put on trial for his crimes and sentenced to death by hanging for killing Goff.
