Mooresville Native Killed In Car-Train Crash Friday

Mrs. Carolyn Phillips Murdock, 30 year-old resident of 712 Rapp Street in Thomasville and daughter and daughter-on-law of Mooresville residents, was killed late Friday night, December 12, 1969, when her 1959 Ford, traveling south on Old Concord Road just south of Salisbury, ran into the side of the engine of a 12-car Southern Railway freight train.

She was the wife of Larry Murdock, son of Mrs. Jack Murdock of Mooresville and the late Mr. Murdock.

State Trooper D.S. Jarrett, the investigating officer, said the car was demolished as a result of the 10:55 p.m. crash and that the train engine was damaged an estimated $100. The train, the officer reported, was traveling east at the time of the accident. Death was instant, it was reported.

An Iredell county native, Mrs. Murdock was born on October 6, 1939, a daughter of Fred C. and Lutelle Hodgson Phillips of Mooresville. Survivors, in addition to the husband and parents, include: four children, Keith, Jerry, Randy and Camille Murdock, all of the home; one brother, Fred C. Phillips, Jr., of Monroe; and three sisters, Joan Newton (Vernon), Patti Nantz (Doug), Kathi Shuler (Glenn) all of Mooresville. The maternal grandmother, Mrs. H.C. Hodgson of Harmony, also survives.

Funeral services for Mrs. Murdock were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, December 14, 1969, in the chapel of the Green Funeral Home in Thomasville, and burial was in Victory Baptist Church Cemetery, Thomasville.
