Born in Windsor Township, York County, Pennsylvania, the son of Jacob & Lydia (Reichard) Smith, in 1860 he was laborer living with and/or working for the Martin Feigley family in Springfield Township, York County. He stood 5' 5" tall and had brown hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in York Aubust 24, 1864, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 27 as a private with Co. E, 207th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 31, 1865, at Alexandria, Virginia.

He married Frances Glatfelter October 5, 1871, in York and fathered Ella Olivia (b. 11/27/72 - married J. F. Goodling), Ida M. (b. 01/09/79, d. 03/07/80), and William H. (b. 12/05/80). Cause of his death is listed as "cerebral thrombosis" with "arteriosclerosis" a contributing factor.
