Author. Irina Korschunow was of German and Russian ancestry. From 1949 to 1954, she studied German, English and sociology in Goettingen and Munich. Her first novel "Der bunte Hund, das schwarze Schaf und der Angsthase" was published in 1958. It was a children´s book and during the next decade, she wrote several award-winning books for children. Especially the "Wawuschels" were popular and were adapted for TV (in the 1970s by Herbert K. Schulz) and for theater (2015 by Martin Chlupka). In the 1980s, Irina Korschunow started to adress also adults with at first autobiografic novels. Her books were translated in more than 15 languages. She also wrote scripts for TV and amateur plays, book reviews and commentaries. She was member of "PEN-Zentrum Deutschland", an association of poets, essayists and novelists. In 1987, she was awared with the "Bundesverdienstkreuz 1. Klasse" (Federal Cross of Merit, first grade) for her literary and social works. In 1995, she was awarded with the "Bayerische Verdienstorden" (Medal of Merit of the State of Bavaria). One of the other prices she was also awared with was the "Roswitha-Gedenkmedialle" (1987). In 1954, she married Alex Korschunow who was a geophysicist. They had one child. Her parents were Peter Masterow and his wife Paula.
