4350 Private H (or G H/C H) Fletcher, 1st Battalion the Manchester Regiment. The battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing from Gibraltar and was in Natal by 7 Oct 1899. The battalion was moved up to Ladysmith, and was present with General French at the battle of Elandslaagte on 21 Oct 1899 (11 men killed & 31 wounded). The battalion was in Ladysmith throughout the siege, and on 6 Jan 1900 during the great attack, held Caesar's Camp against a determined assault (33 killed, 41 wounded). During the recuperation period following the relief of Ladysmith, Private Fletcher died of dysentery in the military hospital, Ladysmith. He is also commemorated on the Manchester Regiment Boer War memorial St Ann's Square, Manchester, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/194361/) and on the Manchester Regiment Boer War memorial plaque in Manchester Cathedral, Victoria Street, Manchester, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/70041/).

He is recorded under "Unknown Units" on the Boer War memorial in Ladysmith cemetery. He is not included under the Manchester Regiment on the memorial and does not appear on the memorial in Intombi cemetery.

Recorded as G H Fletcher on the cemetery memorial. Pte G Fletcher of 13th Hussars is commemorated on the Elandslaagte Battlefield Memorial (see Find a Grave 226244054). Rifleman G H Fletcher, 3rd Battalion the King's Royal Rifle Corps, is commemorated on the memorial in the Mooi River Military Cemetery (see Find a Grave memorial 224040011).
