Irene Hunter Aker, 105 years 9 months and 22 days of age, of Somerset, Kentucky, departed this life on Friday, June 18th, 2021 at her home following an extended illness.

Irene was born in the Sugar Hill community of Pulaski County, Kentucky on Friday, August 27th, 1915, daughter of the late William Allen "Willie" and Georgia McGahan Hunter. Irene was born during the time of World War I and survived the challenging times of World War II and the "Great Depression", her stamina and tenacity also helped her to endure the times of two pandemics. She was a strong independent woman of faith that raised her children in the fear and admonition of the Lord. She enjoyed reading the Bible and had accomplished reading it through its entirety three times by the age of 100.

Irene was a kindhearted and loving mother, who was the epitome of the Biblical Virtuous Woman. Her strength and honor were her clothing and her rejoicing time has come. She was of the Baptist Faith and a member of the Bethel Baptist Church, where she enjoyed teaching Vacation Bible School, working with the Women in the WMU with whom she made tireless and valuable contributions of time and efforts. She also enjoyed flowers and the tranquility of being in the presence of the Lord.

Irene was survived by two daughters, Emily Ester (and Rick) Kaelin of Springhill, Florida and Mary Catherine David of Dallas, Texas; three sons, David Douglas (and Wanda) Aker of Corbin, Kentucky, Stephen Hunter (and Donna) Aker of Science Hill, Kentucky, and Michael Dale (and Lesa) Aker of Eubank, Kentucky; eighteen grandchildren; twenty-five grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends who mourn her passing.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Allen "Willie" Hunter, who departed this life on March 30th, 1918 and Georgia Hunter, who departed this life on March 23rd, 1977; her loving husband, Herald Aker, whom she married on June 17th, 1931 and who departed this life on January 19th, 1988; two sons, George William Aker and Joe Allen Aker; one daughter, Judy Ellen Aker, who was born into eternal life on January 12th, 1941; and one sister, Pauline Hunter Gilbert, who departed this life on July 21st, 1931.

Visitations were held from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 22nd, 2021 at the Somerset Undertaking Company & Crematory in Somerset, Kentucky.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 22nd, 2021 in the Chapel of the Somerset Undertaking Company & Crematory with Bro. Rick Shannon and Bro. Vincent Carman officiating.

Interment followed in the Lakeside Memorial Gardens in Pulaski County, Kentucky.

THIS IS A TRIBUTE IN MEMORY OF IRENE,

If you could see where I have gone
the beauty of this place ..
And how it feels to know you're home
to see the Savior's face.

To wake in peace and know no fear
just joy beyond compare ..
While still on earth you miss me yet
you wouldn't want me there.

If you could see where I have gone
had made the trip with me ..
You'd know I didn't go alone
the Savior came with me.

When I awoke, He was by my side
and reached down His hand ..
Said, "Hurry, you're going home
to a grand and glorious land."

Don't worry over those you love
for I'm not just with you ..
And don't you know when you're with me
they'll long to be here, too?"

If you could see where I have gone
and see what I've been shown ..
You'd never know another fear
or ever feel alone.
