Daughter of Lewis & Mary Bond of Bertie County NC.

Husband's first name and date of their marriage is unknown. No children located yet from this union.

Polly's Will, probated in 1855 in Bertie County NC, listed her nieces and nephews as heirs. No husband or children or grandchildren were mentioned.

1850 US Census shows her living in the household of her brother, Lewis. He died a year later in 1851.

1860 US Census shows her living alone between two of her great-nephews, James Bond age 29 and Lewis Bond, age 30. Another nephew, Lewis T. Bond age 40, also lives down the street.

Polly's brother, John Bond, provided the land for John Bond Family Cemetery when his sister-in-law, Mary Catherine Pugh Bond, died and was buried there in 1823. John himself died three years later and was buried there. John's wife Sallie was buried there in 1836. Lewis Bond, brother of John and husband of Catherine, was buried there at his death in 1851. Lucinda Bond Wheeler was the daughter of Lewis and Catherine. Lucinda was married at the family plantation (named Willow Hall) to Dr S.J. Wheeler. They both died 90 days apart at Willow Hall in 1879 during an outbreak of yellow fever and they both are buried in the John Bond Family Cemetery. There is a Lewis Bond Cemetery about 3.5 miles away which belonged to a cousin or nephew of John and Lewis Bond who was also named Lewis Bond. It is known as the Lewis Bond Cemetery. John and Lewis Bond were the grandsons of Thomas Bond Sr. Thomas had 4 sons and 2 daughters. The four sons were named Thomas Jr., John, Lewis and James. Every generation since Thomas Sr. has had at least 2 boys with each of these given names so it is very difficult to unscramble them. Also, when the slaves from the Bond plantations were freed, some of those slaves took Bond as their surname and you will see the names of Thomas, John, Lewis and James given to male children in these families also. Send an email to us (see our Profile page) for the names of African-American cemeteries we have found in this area.
