"Justus DeCourcy, 74 years old, a former member of the Independence city council, was injured fatally at 6:15 o'clock last night when he was struck by a motorcycle on Winner road at Norwood avenue.

Mr. DeCourcy left a bus at Norwood avenue and was walking across the south lane of Winner road when the motorcycle hit him. The machine was driven by Eugene Barnhart, 20 years old, Independence. Riding with Barnhart was Lawrence Stapleton, 18, also of Independence.

William Talley and Glen Williamson, deputy sheriffs, said Barnhart told them he saw Mr. DeCourcy when his machine was half a block away from the elderly man. Barnhart said he slowed down, but Mr. DeCourcy stumbled and fell directly into the path of the motorcycle.

Mr. DeCourcy suffered a fractured right hip and a head injury. He was taken to the Independence sanitarium by a motorist hailed by Barnhart and Stapleton. The former Independence city official died at 9:55 o'clock at the sanitarium.

Mr. DeCourcy was a member of the Independence city council in 1902. He continued his political activity after he left the council. Ill health caused his retirement from the coal and feed business several years ago.

Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Mollie Woody, and a niece, Miss Rowena Shelton, both of the home at 11425 E. 19th street, Independence." The Kansas City Times, January 4, 1938
