4479 Private E Lowry, 19th (Queen Alexandra's Own Royal) Hussars. He deployed from India to Natal with his Regiment in Sep 1899 before the Second Anglo Boer War started. They fought at Rietfontein on 24 Oct 1899 and at the battle of Lombard's Kop or Ladysmith on 30 Oct 1899 where they operated with the 5th Lancers. They were in Ladysmith throughout the siege. On the night of 7 Dec 1899 one squadron "penetrated some four miles towards the north, destroying the enemy's telegraph line and burning various kraals and shelters ordinarily used by them". Private Lowry died of dysentery at Intombi Hospital, Ladysmith, Natal. He was buried in Intombi cemetery.
