He joined the Metropolitan Police as warrant number 63371 on 24 Feb 1879, starting as a PC on N (Islington) Division. On the night of the 1881 census he was living in the unmarried officers' accommodation at the police station at 17 Kingsland Road in Hackney, whereas ten years later he and his wife were at 88 Howson Road in the St Mary's ecclesiastical parish or district of Lewisham, showing he had transferred to P (Camberwell) Division. The 1891 census also shows he had by then been promoted to Sergeant, his final rank. The couple had no surviving children by 1892.

He was still serving P Division and living at 88 Howson Road, Brockley on the date of his death. His widow was granted a compassionate allowance of £15 by a Home Office letter of 10 February 1893, with the register of such allowances stating his death had been due to "Heart Disease & Shock in capturing [a] prisoner". He was buried on 21 December.
