Harriet Phillips Aberle, 84, died after a long illness on January 3, 2016 with family by her side. She was born on December 1, 1931, to Marie Layman Phillips and Dr. Edward J. Phillips of St. Peter, Minnesota.
Harriet grew up in Missouri and graduated valedictorian from Knox City High School. She was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority and graduated with honors in Mathematics from The University of Missouri. Harriet then worked for McDonnell Aircraft in its theoretical department. She married James Adam Aberle in 1953 and moved first to New York and then to Old Greenwich, Connecticut, where they raised daughters, Susan Manganiello (Edward) and Jane Breen (H. Timothy) of Old Greenwich. Harriet was an active school and community volunteer, serving in leadership roles in numerous organizations. She was a board member of The Greenwich Symphony and member of the Old Greenwich Garden Club for many years. Harriet also enjoyed competitive bridge games and traveling. Above all, Harriet adored her grandchildren and enjoyed sharing their lives.
Harriet is survived by her daughters, their husbands, and five grandchildren: Timothy E. "Ned" Breen, Caitlin Breen Thomas (Ryan), Sean Breen McMurtry (Scott), Claire E. Manganiello and James A. Manganiello. She is also survived by numerous members of the Phillips and Aberle families. Harriet was predeceased by her parents and husband.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Neighbor to Neighbor or The Greenwich Symphony would be appreciated. A memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 13th, 10am, at Christ Church, Greenwich.
