4879 Private H Austin, 5th (Royal Irish) Lancers. The Regiment was stationed in Ladysmith, South Africa at the start of the Second Anglo Boer War. They fought in the Battle of Elandslaagte on 21 Oct 1899, just NE of Ladysmith and were in the action of Rietfontein on 24 Oct 1900. They were in Ladysmith throughout the siege. They were sent to reinforce Waggon Hill in the great attack on 6 Jan 1900. Private Austin died from enteric fever (typhoid) at Intombi Hospital, Ladysmith, Natal. He was buried in Intombi cemetery. He is also commemorated on the 5th (Royal Irish) Lancers Boer War memorial plaque in St Patrick's Cathedral, St Patrick's Close, Dublin, Ireland (see: http://www.irishwarmemorials.ie/Memorials-Detail?memoId=402).
