Dot was born on the family farm on River Street in Shavertown on Aug. 25, 1919, the daughter of Karl L. and Jennie ( Shaver) McCune.
She attended elementary school in Shavertown and was the last surviving member of the Andes Central School Class of 1937. She married John James Andrews of South Kortright on Nov. 11, 1943, at Shavertown. He predeceased her on Jan. 10, 1983.
After high school graduation, she was employed by the former First National Bank of Andes, a job she loved and continued in until the birth of her children. The decision to leave the bank and be a stay-at-home mom was one she never regretted and the happiest years of her life were spent raising her family.
During that period she served as the treasurer of the Andes Central School and was Andes village clerk and the village board meetings were held in her home. She was the secretary-treasurer of the Andes Cemetery for more than 40 years and had served on the committee that raised funds for and oversaw the construction of the "new" receiving vault at the cemetery. She was keenly interested in the well-being of the cemetery and provided the flowers for the entrance urns. When her sons were in high school, she worked as an administrative assistant at the State University College at Delhi, retiring in 1982, She enjoyed that job and "mothered" many of the students who lived in "her" dorm, O'Connor Hall.
Volunteer work was very important to Dot and she raised her family to feel the same. As a charter member of the Andes Society for History she managed the society's thrift shop for many years. Dot was a member of the Andes Fire Department Auxiliary and for many years she organized the annual Andes Community Parade.
Her church life began at very young age at the First Presbyterian Church of Shavertown where she attended Sunday school, became a Sunday School teacher and superintendent, sang in the choir and played the piano. In 1950, she started attending the Presbyterian church in Andes and had missed very few Sundays since. Dot was Sunday School superintendent for more than 25 years and grew the Sunday school to more than 130 pupils. She had been president of the Ladies,' served as an ordained elder and clerk of Session and was on the board of trustees at the time the church merged with her former Shavertown church and dismantled Shavertown church was used to build the chapel. She was always happy to see the Good Shepherd window from Shavertown that had been installed in the front of the Andes sanctuary. She loved sacred music and was a member of the Andes choir for more than 40 years and continued to sing the alto part from her pew right up until her last Sunday there two weeks ago. Her attendance at worship each Sunday was the high point of her week.
Being a farm girl at heart, she always enjoyed seeing farm animals and was taught by her mother at an early age that your hands were never to be idle. With that in mind, she could always be found baking, canning, piecing a quilt or at her sewing machine creating clothes for her extensive doll collection. Her faith was unwavering and there was no doubt in her mind that she would be reunited with her beloved family in the next life.
She became a grandmother when she was in her 70's and gladly accepted that role with the same energy she poured into everything she did; babysitting and keeping them before and after school for many years. She was devoted to her grandchildren and was an integral part of their lives, teaching them the sometimes lost grandmotherly arts of sewing, baking and gardening. Her family was fed at her house multiple times a week well into her 90's.
