Daughter of Ann Jemima (Simms) and Augustus Bradley Sweeney. Her father was absent as she was growing up. The family moved to St. Marys KS in the 1870s, where her mother died in 1879. The children were raised by their aunt, Lydia Maria (Simms) Rhodes. The family then moved to Custer Co. NE, where Rita married Oscar Liddle on 17 June 1889. By 1900, they were living in Ouray CO, where Oscar was a miner, and they later moved to Julesburg CO, where Oscar was a banker, and then to Denver. After Oscar's death, Rita returned to Broken Bow NE where she lived out her life. Her niece, Rita (Sweeney) Thornton and her husband Walter accompanied the body to Denver for burial.
