Three children survive Mrs. Ferguson: James Caulley Deringer and Harry Hurtt Deringer of Alexandria, Va. and Amanda Hurtt Deringer of Arlington, Va.; three stepdaughters: Holly Ferguson Rhodes, Carolyn Hope Ferguson and Heather Oakleaf Ferguson of Chestertown, Md. survive. Her sisters: Jamie C. Gaudion of Dover-Foxcroft, Me. and Bridget C. Burkhart of Houston, Texas; six grandchildren, and two step-grandchildren also survive.
Born in Brownsville, Pa., she graduated in 1962 from Hollins College in Roanoke, Va.
After marrying her first husband, H. Hurtt Deringer, she moved to Chestertown, Md. in 1962.
She worked at Washington College for the Associated Writing Program in the early 1970's. Later, she worked at the Corsica Bookstore and the Rhodes Gift Shop in Chestertown. Hila helped her husband, David, at David H. Ferguson Oriental Rugs in downtown Chestertown.
She was a member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church Altar Guild and was actively involved in local community organizations including the Kent County Historical Society and the Candelight Walking Tour. She was an avid reader and enjoyed walking with her friends.
A memorial service was held on Thursday, November 15, 2007 at 2 p.m. in the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Chestertown, Md. The Reverend Daniel L. Gross will officiated.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 101 North Cross Street, Chestertown, Md., 21620.
